OverView of Nagan
Nagan village is 500 year old, developed from one family,called 'BISHT'. To this day apart from brides who have joined families living there, only BISHTs inhabit the village The name 'Nagan'comes from a holy snake called Nag Nagin. The area is forested and even now, cheetah amd many forms of wild life roam the area, like lizzard, mongoose, fox, bear, forest chicken and goat and wild boar.
25 families live in the village but many have relatives who work outside of the area, either in Delhi or other cities.
Access is by one road up a very steep hill. At the bottom of the hill a river called Sukarkhad flows directly from the Himalayas. During Monsoon the river rises more than 20 times and can be quite dangerous.
Closest town Chauntra, is home to one of the largest Tibetan temple and colony outside of TIbet.
Major towns within 10 KM are Joginder Nagar, Bir [famous for glyding]. Dharamsala is 1 hour away by road.
The village celebrates 3 unique festivals, one for WALNUTS, called SHAIR. The festival dates vary but are normally celebrated at the end of Monsoon. [September] PATRODU festival uses arbi laves [kchalu]. The third festival called Chidnu celebrates animals being tick free.
500 years ago DITU BISHT discovered Nagan which was a jungle area at that time. Cheetas and other wild animals were commonplace. In fact even now, Cheetas do come to the village at night and many dogs and goats have been taken over the years.
Ditu had 3 sons Gopala, Nant and Gokal. They all married and between them produced 5 sons. They may have also had daughters but as was the custom in those days, the birth of girls was not recorded.
Gokal left the village to relocate 2km away, to a place called Haar. Nant's great grandson also left the village and established a village called Main, 4 km from Nagan. These villages still exist and now the Bisht family are located over these 3 villages, Haar, Main and Nagan.
At the last count almost 100 Bisht families live in the area. Many still work and live off the land. Others have travelled to Delhi and even overseas. During wedding season, people travel long distances to continue the traditions and a wedding can last 5 days.
I am 10th generation Bisht and very proud of it. I have a family tree created from the records of Haridwar listing all the male descendants. Only recently unfortunately, female Bishts have been included in the tree.
