OverView of Vanduvancheri
Vanduvancheri village was a forest during Raja Sarfoji's days.A sage lived in a mutt inside the forest.It was on the bank of a small pond(Present day Madathu vasal kulam near Vanduvancheri sudukadu).He taught the king a few philosophies and the Raja became his diciple.He stayed in another portion of the forest near the river when he came for lessons from the sage.He named that part of the village as Sarabojirajapuram and another portion as Thulasiapattinam after Thulajaji Raja.When the sage died of snake bite he summoned the small boy who was attending the sage during his old age and granted the land as gift to the small boy called Vazhiya Thevan.That portion of the village was named as Vanduvancheri after godess VanduraiMariamman discovered fron insects(vandu).Vazhiya Thevan's family was in posession of the whole village.Present day Kana Chovanna family and thier brothers families Chokalinga Thevar vagayara Veerapapillai vagayara until it was taken in an auction by Mohammed Mohaideen Maraikar(Kunjali Marickar's great grandfather)After that it came into posession of the Maraikar.Still Kana Chovanna Family and Marikar families are called as Pannai families in the village.During Sangam period Avvaiyar stayed in the forest on a rainy day in a hut of a kollan nearby.As per her boon all the places but Kollan thidal were washed away by the flood of valavanar river.In that remembrance the Rajas Sarfoji and Thulajaji built Avvaiyar koil.The lingam in that temple was from kasi brought by the king himself praying for a child and kept in the temple. So the swami is called Viswanathar in Avvaiyar koil
