OverView of Butala

Butala Village, known in the former times as Butan-Wala, was a village founded by the Bal Jatt Zamindars in the Bangar Area of Amritsar District. Bangar Region consists of villages or areas of Mehta, Rayya, Baba Baba Bakala, Sathiala, Butala, upto the town of Jandiala Guru.In the 16th and early 17th Century, The Bal Jatt Zamindars of Butala village were followers of Sakhi Sarwar (Mystic). Popularly known as Sultani Sect. Then by some time between 1620-1640, they denounced the worship of graves of Sakhi Sarwar. The Bal Jatt Zamindars all became Sikhs. According to the Oral Tradition of the Bal Jatt Farmers of Butala, A true devout Sikh Women by the name of Mai Santi, who was married to a Bal Jatt Zamindar, refused to worship the so called grave of Sakhi Sarwar. Mai Santi declared that she was only a Sikh, and that her head will never bow down to the so called grave of a Sakhi Sarwar. This caused distress among the Bal Jatt farmers who were Sultanis. But some time later her husband became a Sikh, and the rest of the Bal Jatt farmers also became Sikhs. Mai Santi had a son named Bhai Pala Bal. Guru Hargobind Sahib Jee, the Sixth Guru of the Sikh Faith, visited village of Butala, hearing of the great devotion of Mai Santi and who she was true to her faith. During the Sikh Misl Period, around 1750s, the area came under the protection of Ahluwalia Sikh Misl, one of the many Sikh Confederacies that ruled central Punjab during the latter half of the 18th century. Butala village formed the boundary between the Ahluwalia Misl and Ramgarhia Misl, upto 1803.
